The winningest coach in college football, legendary Frank Beamer of Va Tech, is stepping down. Is this good or bad news for Va Tech fans?

I argue this is good news and here's why: Frank Beamer was a cornerback when he played football himself. He always had a defense-first mindset that guided his old-school approach to coaching. He was always a fan of the sports writers and pollsters who shared his approach to football. After all, legendary champions are always built on a strong defense. Defense wins chamionships. I didn't make that up. That's verse 1 of the football bible. And Frank Beamer lived by that rule. That's why Bud Foster, arguably the best defensive coordinator in college football was Beamer's right-hand man throughout the years. Virginia Tech built some of the best defenses in college football. I cannot remember one single year out of the 30 years Beamer coached the Hokies that they had a lousy defense. I can only remember the good and the great defenses throughout the years. And Bud Foster deserves as much credit for that as anyone else, including Beamer. 

But defense alone cannot win championships. Va Tech was never able to build offenses to match the defenses they had throughout the years. All they knew how to do offesively was assemble talented guys like Michael Vick and let them try to win the game by themselves. 20 points was always the magic number for Va Tech in the big games. If the defense could hold the opponent to 20 points or less the offense could usually find a way to win. Once the opponent got above 20 points the Hokies would usually lose. I've been saying for years that until Va Tech can get an offensive coordinator to match Bud Foster they'll always be the team that can make it to the big game but never win it.
